Think theatrical anime expansion begins and ends with mainstream battle shonen? India's cinema receipts just destroyed that assumption.

Doraemon: Castle of the Undersea Devil has officially cemented its status as India's second-highest-grossing anime film in cinematic history, turning generational broadcast familiarity into massive box-office leverage.

The Numbers Behind the Surge

The feature's theatrical run in Indian cinemas reached cumulative gross of Rs 22.50 crore by its second Wednesday. Momentum held firm through midweek screenings; box office tracking registered Rs 1 crore haul on second Tuesday to hit Rs 22 crore milestone, followed by modest 25 percent decline heading into Wednesday.

Sustained holdovers at this level highlight rare commercial consistency for animated theatrical imports in territory. While premium theatrical bookings for niche titles usually suffer sharp post-opening collapse, Doraemon commands decades of domestic television ubiquity across multilingual Indian broadcasts. This foundational visibility translated directly into multi-week theater turnout.

Generational Fan Engagement

Box office traction was preceded by direct fan events during rollout, including dedicated character appearances at film's Indian premiere that engaged family audiences directly. While older demographics drive box office for late-night franchise films, this performance underlines distinct market dynamic: long-running legacy children's properties hold broader demographic penetration across major Indian metropolitan circuits than seasonal imports.

Global distributors monitoring South Asian theatrical expansion now face clear precedent: childhood broadcast staples possess built-in reach capable of matching any modern prestige release.
