Can a modern movie vocalist capture the lightning-in-a-bottle melodrama of 90s CLAMP fantasy? With the new Magic Knight Rayearth anime confirmed for Fall 2026, production placed opening duties on singer-songwriter Touka—best known to global anime audiences for her work on Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume.

Bridging Cinematic Scores and Weekly TV Hype

Transitioning from self-contained theatrical features to episodic anime requires a total shift in sonic architecture. Unlike Suzume, which deployed music at massive emotional narrative poles, a weekly broadcast opening serves as an adrenaline gatekeeper.

Touka outlined that fundamental contrast in a recent discussion:

"While movie soundtracks tend to play before the story begins or after it ends, I believe that music for anime series plays right in the middle of the story, at the very moment when viewers are most eager to know what happens next. That’s why, rather than trying to convey something new, I wanted to create music that would help viewers immerse themselves in the story."

She noted her core goal was tailoring the track to capture the excitement of sitting down for a fresh broadcast: "I wrote this song with the goal of creating music that would be perfect for that very first moment when you sit down to watch the new episode every week on TV with such excitement."

Balancing Mecha, Isekai, and Magical Girls

Long before modern productions layered subgenres, CLAMP's 1993 manga fused portal fantasy, mecha warfare, and mahou shoujo tropes. Touka admitted to reading the manga immediately upon receiving the offer, tackling the complex genre collision through character emotion rather than technical genre-mashing:

"I see both magic and machinery as embodiments of the characters’ sincere feelings. Their feelings shine brightly, whether in Isekai or anywhere else. I think that’s what's valued the most."

Asked about matching the legacy of the original TV anime themes, Touka confirmed she deliberately targeted continuity: "I composed this piece while thinking about how to turn the original series into music and share it with people today."

When pressed on personal survivability in Cephiro's brutal fantasy setting, Touka gave a grounded response: "If I were to find myself in a fantasy world, I think the first thing I’d do is figure out how to survive. I don’t think I would be able to just run headlong into it like the main characters of Rayearth. That’s exactly why I admire them."

Magic Knight Rayearth faces the impossible task of satisfying decades-old nostalgia while pulling in modern viewers—and Touka's theme song represents the frontline of that gamble.
